A plan-like chalk and charcoal sketch drawn next to a large hole in the wall revealing a washroom beyond. A straightforward reason to describe this as a diptych (as its title does) is the way the two ‘forms’ sit side-by-side echoing the way that hinged or connected painted panels might operate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other dualities exist in the histories and constitution of two co-existing components. The charcoal oval was quick to make (I swung my arm round using my shoulder to centrally anchor and control the line) and for a moment its freshness pointed to the beginnings of an idea forming, something substantial – but as a material thing I knew it might not stick around too long …being made in an environment that doesn’t particularly care what happens to just another dirty mark on the wall. In contrast, the breach in the wall has existed definitively and structurally for years; formed long ago with conviction, and at the expense of something else, it was an act of demolition and permanence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proximal, procedural and material relationships aside, an emotional and cognitive driver of the process relating to visual depth and spatial imagination was also in play. I worked in one room the whole time to make the wall drawing without setting a foot in the other one (the washroom behind the breach). It felt important to only look, and to not physically trespass on that space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
